Specialized ENT and Cochlear Implant Centre Opens at Sarvodaya Hospital, Sector 8, Faridabad

Sarvodaya Hospital at Sector 8, Faridabad, has launched a specialized ENT and Cochlear Implant Centre for specially-abled deaf and mute people. The state-of-the-art center will perform rhinoplasty, cochlear implantation and advanced surgeries for sleep apnea and snoring. This year, the hospital, under the leadership of ENT and cochlear implant specialist Dr. Ravi Bhatia, also achieved the landmark of successfully performing cochlear implant surgery on 200 children who were born deaf-and-mute.

Said Dr. Ravi Bhatia, Director – ENT & Cochlear Implant, Sarvodaya Hospital, Sector – 8, Faridabad: “The specially-abled deaf and mute people are not a burden on society. The technical advances and expertise of medical specialists can help them live a normal life, like everyone else. With this intent, we have opened an exclusive ENT and Cochlear Implant Centre at our hospital, well-equipped with modern infrastructure and latest technology. It is backed by a dedicated team of ENT surgeons, speech therapists, vestibular physical therapists, auditory-verbal therapists and audiologists. These are qualified in performing rhinoplasty, cochlear implantation and advanced surgeries for sleep apnea and snoring.”

Added Dr. Ravi Bhatia: “In a survey conducted by WHO in India in 2005, about 63 million people were found to be suffering from deafness, which is a significant number. In such people, a cochlear implant is the need of the hour. This involves a sound processor that is worn behind the ear. A transmitter sends sound signals to a receiver and stimulator implanted under the skin. These stimulate the auditory nerve with electrodes that have been placed in the cochlea, which is a bone in the inner ear that plays a key role in hearing. With the help of speech therapy, deaf-and-mute people are made capable of hearing and speaking, enabling them to live a normal life.”

Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad, is also running a free cochlear implant scheme of the Government of India. Under this, if a child below 5 years of age and a monthly family income of less than Rs 15,000 needs a cochlear implant, the Government bears all the expenses (about Rs 9 lakhs in total) as well as provide free speech-therapy for the next 2 years. Sarvodaya Hospital is only the second hospital in Haryana to be recognized for implanting cochlear implants funded by the Government of India. It was selected for cochlear implantation after passing the criteria of having a well-equipped ENT centre with modern technology and a team of skilled doctors. The hospital has now achieved the milestone of performing cochlear implants on 200 deaf-and-mute children under the Govt. of India scheme.
